In May 2012 we set up North West Blood Bikes Lancs & Lakes (NWBBLL) to help all the NHS hospitals in our area, with the aim of saving the hospitals money by transporting blood, platelets, samples for analysis, Doctors notes, medication and even donor breast milk for premature babies, by motorcycle, whether Urgent, Very Urgent or Emergency out of normal working hours i.e. through the night during the week and 24 hours a day at weekends and Bank Holidays.
In our first 12 months we were called out 812 times, now we have just reached 32,000 times and averaging 1,000 call outs per month at no cost to the NHS. We have 350 volunteers spread about the area and no-one gets paid, but we have saved the hospitals hundreds of thousands of pounds.
What is proposed should work really well and if we can help achieve more savings and help the efficiency we ill be willing volunteers.
